I’ve spent a few months playing with the XBox Media Center, and find its scalability and usefulness incredible. I’ll post more about it later, but PseudoTV Live is one of the coolest things I’ve used for on-PC media.

Free to Stream Channels

Monday, June 23rd, 2014

Upon careful research, I’ve discovered the following channels are available for streaming online for free, in their entirety (with a few blackout exceptions). Some of these require a free membership to a website which also offers further streaming options and paid plans, but every channel I’m listing on here is free to legally stream on any laptop or computer to the best of my knowledge.

Please note how many of these channels you might be paying for with a cable subscription (counted in the 100+ channel package you have along with 70-100+ music channels, usually), and how many of them offer alternative programming to other pay channels.

  1. WeatherNation TV (offered by DirecTV in place of The Weather Channel during horrendous carriage fee negotiations)
  2. RT (Russia Today, English language news channel)
  3. Bloomberg TV
  4. Huff Post Live (a news channel offered by The Huffington Post online newspaper)
  5. CSPAN
  6. CSPAN2 (both 1 & 2 are counted in your cable channels)
  7. CSPAN3 (usually not counted nor offered)
  8. NASA TV
  9. Christian Television Network (also counts as a local channel for those in Nashville, WHTN-TV)
  10. QVC
  11. QVC+
  12. HSN
  13. HSN2
  14. Jewelry Television
  15. ShopHQ (formerly ShopNBC)
  16. VEVO Hits (similar to an MTV music video channel)
  17. VEVO Flow (BET Jams type channel)
  18. VEVO Nashville (CMT True Country, et al.)
  19. The Pentagon Channel (military news, plus lifestyle shows including cooking and sporting events)
  20. NHK World (English language, but a Japanese version of Headline News, essentially)
  21. Al Jazeera America (Some consider it one of the best news networks on the planet; others consider it exceptionally biased)
  22. DW.DE (English Language news channel from Germany)
  23. Free Speech TV
  24. CCTV News (English Language News from China)
  25. Antenna TV (retro shows)
  26. thisTV (older movies and dramas)
  27. byuTV (from Brigham Young)
  28. France24 (English Language News from France)
  29. CNC World (English language news from China)
  30. ENCA (eNews Channel Africa, focusing on South Africa)
  31. NDTV (New Delhi Television Limited, English language from India)
  32. PressTV (English language news from Iran)
  33. Sky News International (British global news channel)
  34. MT10 (local channel for me; cable access channel for Middle Tennessee State University)
  35. RCTV (Rutherford County TV, the government access channel for my home community)

Not exactly the most watchable list…but it is 35 legal options for full-on streaming. Many of which you’re already paying for.

Thanks to the Roku Guide, I’m slowly uncovering more channels to watch online.

NHK World English: Live stream of NHK World from Japan.

I will admit, I’m not entirely what to do with this space….but I know that I want to make use of it. Expect blog posts, Online TV (“Cut the cable”) insights, life goals statements and projections, other business-related things, and a boat-load of multimedia (pics and vids of and/or by me) if I can get around to taking and posting them.
